The highlight of yesterday's itinerary, for me, was an all too brief visit at Ronco del Gnemiz. More on that later.... This morning I'll have to let the pictures do most of the talking, as I've just enough time for a quick post before heading off to the Consorzio to taste a lineup of Schioppettino and Pignolo.
The dogs were cute; the 2009 Sauvignon "Peri" was gorgeous.

The dogs were both super cute in their own ways: the little gal was obviously a "floozy," as one of my fellow travelers coined her; the big guy was shy but a real sweetheart once he had a while to come around.
Sauvignon "Peri" comes from a single vineyard of old-vine (30-35 years), extremely low yield (15-18 hl/ha) Sauvignon. It wears a definite oak stamp (all the Gnemiz wines are barrel aged) but the wood is very well integrated. On the nose, there was a big time black licorice element, something I find rarely in SB (but really dig when I do), along with a really appealing celery root character. Round and supple in the mouth, it also had a very firm spine of acid and minerality. The winemaker described it as austere but that was only as a point of comparison to his richer expression of Sauvignon, called "Sol."
