David,

A great photo, which gives me a slightly sick feeling in the stomach. . . Once a friend gave me a home grown (is it a brocoflower?) which I washed and tried to cook - it was full of little bugs and insects and I had to throw it away. I've avoided them since, though I love the look of them.

Edward,

I was tempted to splice in a little garden gnome or seahorse to throw people off the trail. But you nailed it. Broccoflower it is, also known more specifically and poetically as Romanesco broccoli.

Sorry to have triggered a gut wrenching memory response. You really should give it a whirl again (perhaps from a farmers market rather than a pal's back yard...), as it's actually quite tasty.

I was thinking Broccoli, didn't pick up on the cauliflower - had it from the market, and still don't like it as much as the broccoli or the cauliflower...
