Wine Dinner at Bistro on the Brandywine: Twisted French Classics

If you were bummed about missing the wine dinner I hosted at Bistro on the Brandywine at the beginning of this month, don’t despair. You actually didn’t miss anything. That's not me practicing self-deprecation. Rather, dinner was canceled, no thanks to the blizzard of ’09, that whopping five inches of powder that blanketed the Philadelphia area on February 3. So, we’ve decided to give it another whirl, a month later to the day.

I’ll be hosting a wine dinner at Bistro on the Brandywine out in bucolic Chadds Ford, PA, on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. BoB’s chef, Seth Harvey, will put a few twists on otherwise ostensibly classic French bistro dishes, while I’ll be pouring some great value French wines from regions such as Beaujolais, Madiran, Rivesaltes and, you guessed it, the Loire. At $75 all inclusive, it stands to be a great way to fight the recession blues without depriving your soul of the righteous pleasures of food and wine.

Sound good? Then check out the menu or jump on in and make a reservation online.

Wine Dinner at Brandywine Prime

Michael Majewski, Sommelier, General Manager and Partner at Brandywine Prime, and I have been cooking up plans for our next wine dinner since not long after our last event, back in September of last year. Now that Brandywine Prime's new chef, Daniel Marcantuno, is on board and fully established in his new kitchen, we figured it was high time to bring the food to the table. Formerly Chef de Cuisine at Philadelphia's Brasserie Perrier, Chef Marcantuno has put together what sounds like a fantastic menu. I'm looking forward to it myself.

Dinner will be served on Friday, June 6, 2008 – that's one week from today. The opening reception begins at 6:30 PM. The menu, along with the wine pairings I've selected, appear below. Cost for the evening's festivities is an obscenely reasonable $75, including tax and gratuity. Reservations can be made online or by phone at (610) 388-8088.

November in Philly: Some Choice Food, Wine and Beer Events

Apparently the folks at Philadelphia’s SnackBar don’t believe in answering the phone, accepting on-line reservations or even utilizing an answering machine. After three days of calling – several weeks ago – in an effort to attain a reservation for this past Monday’s dinner with guest chef Shola Olunloyo, I finally gave up. When one of my fellow Philly food bloggers, HungryChic at Lavender Sky, wrote the other day to see if I’d be going, I thought I’d give it one last try – again, no answer, no messaging capability. Finally, after about 20 attempts, someone answered the phone. No surprise, the event was booked. If you missed it too, you can read about it after the fact on eGullet or at my chum PhilaDining’s blog.

If you’re planning ahead rather than ruing missed opportunities, there are a couple of other savory events in the pipeline. If there’s a theme involved, it would seem to be Monday, a notoriously off night for Philly restaurants, many of which simply close the doors for the evening.

  • Monday, November 19
The Wines and Foods of Piedmont
    Osteria – 215-763-0920
6:30 PM reception, 7:00 PM dinner. $150 per person, all inclusive.
I hate to say it, but the wine line-up for the evening, with the exception of the Barbaresco “Sori Paitin” from Paitin di Pasquero-Elia (vintage unknown), looks to be rather pedestrian – a shame given the wealth of great wines from Piemonte. That said, the menu looks good, the food at Osteria is top notch, and the style of cooking pairs quite naturally with northern Italian wines. Reservations are limited to 30 seats.

  • Monday, November 26
    Bière à la Française
    Chick’s Café & Wine Bar – 215-625-3700
7:00 PM. $30 in advance ($40 after November 21) plus tax and tip.
Importer and all-around beer dude Dan Shelton will be on hand at Chick’s to present a guided tasting of French bière de garde. If your experience with French brews starts and stops with Kronenbourg 1664, which would be understandable, this sounds like a great opportunity to discover some of the secrets of the best northern French brasseries. Think French terroir – the Ardennes is too far north to grow wine – with a Belgian sensibility.

Chadds Ford Wine Dinner at Brandywine Prime

I’m hardly out to become what Lenn Thompson at LennDevours is to New York state wines, or what Sonadora at WannabeWino is to Virginia wine country. Once in a while though, I figure I can do my part to spread the word about potentially interesting events at some of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s wineries, particularly when they are combined with happenings at some of the better restaurants in the area.

So, on that note, next Thursday, October 18, Chester County’s own Chadds Ford Winery is teaming up with neighboring chophouse Brandywine Prime for a dual location wine tasting and dinner. The event begins at 6:30 PM with a reception and barrel tasting hosted by winemaker Eric Miller at Chadds Ford Winery. Tasting completed, the event will move two miles down the road for dinner, prepared by Chef Keith Rudolph at Brandywine Prime, where Keith’s menu will be paired with Chadds Ford wines. Cost for the entire event is $85. Check out the menu – or make a reservation.

Wine Dinner at Brandywine Prime

On Thursday, September 20, 2007, I'll be hosting a wine dinner at Brandywine Prime in Chadds Ford, PA. The event will focus on local ingredients and dishes which represent the transition from summer into autumn. As always, I've chosen the wines with an eye to regional affinity, a progression of style and intensity, and an instinct for flavor, texture and structure in the context of each wine's marriage with each dish. Cost for the dinner will be $75 per person, all inclusive. The evening will kick off with a reception beginning at 6:30 PM. Please join me.

Wine Dinner: Vini e Brasati at Toscana Kitchen + Bar

This Wednesday, March 7, 2007, I'll be hosting a dinner at Wilmington, Delaware's Toscana Kitchen + Bar. The event, Vini e Brasati, will focus on one of my favorite seasonal cooking techniques -- braising -- and a selection of wines from northern Italy, with a focus on Piedmont. Proprietor Dan Butler and his team of chefs at Toscana always kick the creativity up a notch for these events. And they keep the pricing very reasonable: $75 per person, all inclusive. For five courses, matched wines and tip, that's a sweet deal. The reception starts at 6:00 PM, followed by seating for dinner at 6:30. For a full description of the menu or to make a reservation, check out http://www.toscanakitchen.com/.

As always, I've chosen the wines with an eye to regional affinity, a progression of style and intensity, and an instinct for flavor, texture and structure in the context of each wine's marriage with each dish. The focus of the event is not didactic. Presentations will be succinct and lively with discussions tailored to the spirit of the audience. Please do join me, and enjoy.
